Course descriptions

Grooves and Moves

This is a multi-level, multi-disciplinary class. We will be drumming, dancing and playing finger cymbals, you choose if you want to do one, two or all! This is a great chance to get to the heart of the music and feel the groove! We’ll collaborate together to create a performance piece with live percussion and dance. Those new to bellydance and/or drumming are very welcome, and experienced dancers and drummers will be challenged!

Full Flow Bellydance

Enjoy a workout for your body and mind as we explore techniques of bellydance and immediately incorporate them into a flowing choreography that will keep you moving. Open to all levels. Those new to bellydance will receive the detailed explanations they need, and experienced dancers will be challenged to add layers and dynamics to the moves they might already be familiar with.

Bellydance for Women of a Certain Age

Fascinated by bellydance but worried about being the oldest/biggest/clutziest/tallest/shortest person in your class? This class will cover you in comfort, as you discover your grace and strength and coordination, confident in the many years of experience Dharlene has in teaching women of all walks of life, and in working with her own injuries and illness while continuing her training. An introductory course, or a re-introduction for dancers who have been away for a while. This class will include a choreography. Tell the family it’s sandwich night and come treat yourself!

Technique Mastery Class for All Levels

The technique mastery class gives dance students the chance to deepen their control and consciousness of the precise technique of bellydance, since sometimes in the throes of a choreography it’s hard to keep absolutely everything in mind. We will drill the foundational movements so we can put the moves into the body where they are safe, and take them out of the brain, which, let’s face it, sometimes has to think of other things! This is for all levels, but not recommended as an introductory course, although it can be taken together with a Level One class. More advanced students will be challenged to layer the technique with different arm movements, shimmies and other nuances of expression.
