A thorough understanding of the rhythms of Middle Eastern music is an essential part of the training of any dancer. Rhythms are explored during the regular dance classes, but for more grounding, and more fun, the drumming classes are a great place to be.
The techniques of the doumbek drum form the core of these classes, but the finger cymbals (zylls or sagat) as well as frame drums such as doff and riq are also introduced.
The most popular dance rhythms are explained, together with their most common variations such as masmoudi saghir, masmoudi kebir, malfouf, maqsoom, ciftitelli, saidi and ayub. We also explore other popular rhythms such as karsilama (9/8), samai (10/8), as well as Turkish 7/8s. Techniques form exploring the wide range of sounds the doumbek are also taught, and they are incorporated into the rhythms. To learn about Middle Eastern rhythms online, check the music links page.
