For winter 2010 we’re going to have an easy-breezy seven week session January 11th to February 25th.
It’s a chance to get down to the deep details of the dance, rather than going through a choreography which can sometimes make you “mumble” certain moves! There are classes for all levels and the glorious Grooves and Moves class will continue in the same time-slot.
NEW TIME: Mondays noon: Full-Flow Bellydance. Technique combined with fancy footwork to keep you moving!
Mondays 7pm: Grooves and Moves (drumming, step combinations and cultural background of popular dance rhythms)
Wednesdays 5:30pm: Advanced Combos and Techniques (featuring a best-of retrospective of tricky parts of past Haft Vadi choreographies)
Thursdays 5:30: Bellydance Technique and Combos for continuing students (minimum one-session prerequisite)
Thursdays 7pm: Discovering Bellydance for new students

Cane Basics & Pop Choreography
Chantal will lead you through drills introducing you to cane techniques, which you get to try out right away in an upbeat choreography to “Eh Daruna Ya Alem” by Egyptian Pop-Legend Hakim. Choreography is suitable for beginners and intermediates (Level 2, 3, 4). No cane experience required.

CHOREOGRAPHY SATURDAY
Rajasthani Oriental
Saturday, September 13, 10:00am – 12:30pm
Kabelya dance is a woman’s dance from the nomadic tribes of the Thar desert in India. The Kabelyas (Saperas: Sap=serpent) are traditionally known to be snake charmers. In this workshop we will get inspired by listening to the music of the nomads from Rajasthan and then learn some of the basic movements from this region which we will then fuse with certain Oriental dance movements that connect back to this ancient form in order to create a fused nomadic/Oriental style of dance.
Finger cymbals owe their name to the Goddess, Cybele. The Arabic word for them is Zagat, and the Turkish is Zyll. We will incluse finger cymbals in this workshop to accompany our dance form with several different adapted rhythm patterns.
*Bring a long skirt, a veil with some hair pins and your zagat!
*Al Andalus: Sephardic/Oriental Dance Prayer (Creative Oriental Dance-Advanced choreography)
Saturday, September 13, 2:30pm – 5:00pm
This choreography will be done to a special version of a classical Spanish Sephardic prayer song called, “En Keloenu”, sung in Hebrew and Spanish by Rosa Zaragoza. The movements are very slow, expressive and fluid. We will use many types of turns to create an expression of the mystical engagement that occurs when we dance from a deep state of inner of being. We will be interpreting the lyrics of the song, which call out for the divine presence. This powerful song is that comes from the Al Andalusian period, when the Muslims, Sephardic Jews and Christians lived together in peace between the 8th and 13th century.

Dance Ritual through Oriental Dance

“The circle is perhaps the most ancient of mystical symbols and the most universal of all dances. The circle dance represents the wholeness of things, the roundness of pregnancy, the breasts, vessels, house and temple. The circle creates solidarity. Because it takes more than two people to complete a circle, the circle creates community. It is the perfect democracy; there is equality. The circle provides a protected, consecrated, all-inclusive space. It is nonlinear, multidirectional and endless.”

Inspired by the ancient traditional sacred circle dances of the world, Lesya has developed an innovative technique to create a ritualistic type of woman’s circle dance, borrowing several movements from Oriental dances in order to achieve this. We will use:
-repeated rhythmical movement combinations to strong percussive beats and live singing
-movement improvisation to release the mind so that we may ‘get lost’ in dance.
-Dervish turns
