Your Classes, Your Way

Haft Vadi Bellydance now specializes in private and semi-private instruction, as well as thematic classes in rhythm and dances from particular parts of the Middle East, such as Egypt, Lebanon and the Persian Gulf region. All classes will include some instruction in the cultural, historical and musical contexts of the dances.

Maybe your office friends, knitting club or book club want to try something new? Then talk to Dharlene about setting up your own customized one-time lesson or a session that you design: choose your own number of weeks, time and content! I can even come to you, perhaps transform your lobby reception area into a dance studio for a night! Just email dharlene@haftvadi.com to start the planning process. Autumn 2010 Session Schedule, Sept. 20th to Dec. 9th

Conversational Egyptian Arabic – language class
Mondays 5:15pm – 6:30pm in Studio Baa at Haft Vadi (the little room)
(Sept. 20th to Dec. 6th)
That’s right! Get started learning Egyptian Arabic right here at Haft Vadi! The classes will be taught by a native-speaker with curriculum design help from Dharlene who has a BA in applied linguistics with a focus on foreign-language acquisition. The classes will get you started with basic vocabulary and grammar to get you friendly fast: greetings, getting-to-know-you conversation, as well as a focus on the lyrics to a great piece of music which we’ll study in the dance class following! Due to the cumulative nature of the class, drop-ins can not be accomodated. Full session registration only, please. Additional materials fee tba.

Cultured Choreography – dance class
Mondays 6:45pm – 8:00pm in Studio Alif at Haft Vadi (the main studio)
(Sept. 20th to Dec. 6th)
Go deeper into your music and express everything you find there! This class will give you everything you expect from a choreography and more: some information about the musicians, the lyrics and the music. Open to multiple levels, but at least two previous sessions of dance would be helpful.

Advancing in Drumming – music class
Tuesdays 6:15pm – 7:15pm in Studio Baa at Haft Vadi (the little room)
(Sept. 21th to Dec. 7th)
Already done some drumming classes at Haft Vadi? Ready to get fancy? Our newest faculty member is a native of Egypt and has extensive experience playing in bands there, and is very eager to take you to the next level in your drumming. Open only to those who have taken a drum class at Haft Vadi in the past. Due to the cumulative nature of the class, drop-ins can not be accomodated. Full session registration only, please.

Pure Technique – dance class
Tuesdays 7:45pm – 9:00pm in Studio Alif at Haft Vadi (the main studio)
(Sept. 21th to Dec. 7th)
Details and drills to give you the strength and precision you need to express yourself freely in our beautiful dance. A basic drum solo choreography will also be part of this class.

Dance Safari – dance class
Thursdays 5:45pm – 7:00pm in Studio Alif at Haft Vadi (the main studio)
(Sept. 23th to Dec. 9th)
Because Egyptian bellydance has had an international audience from the beginning, it’s important to learn the details of the regional dances that would normally be part of a bellydance show in Egypt. This class will give you three weeks per regional style for a total of four regions: Khaliji, Dabke, Saidi and Baladi. Packages of just 3 classes for those interested in only one region will be available for $40.

Discover Bellydance! – the dance class for newbies!
Thursdays 7:15pm – 8:30pm in Studio Alif at Haft Vadi (the main studio)
(Sept. 23th to Oct. 28th) or
(Nov. 4th to Dec. 9th)
New to bellydance? New to putting one foot in front of the other? This is your class. You’ll learn the foundations of this dance, as well as some fascinating facts about the music, the great dancers of the past and present and a tiny smidge of history. Offered in two 6-week sessions. $80/6-week session

Private Lessons
None of these times work for you? Private lessons are cheaper than you think! And for groups, private lessons can actually be cheaper than a regular session, plus, you can choose the time that suits you best, including daytime! Go to the private lessons page for more information.

Policies

Because different teachers take different approaches, we always recommend that even new students who have already studied elsewhere start in a beginner class. If you will be better suited in an intermediate or advanced class, you’ll be moved up after a week or two.

Registered students should make an effort to come to the regular class they signed up for, since that is best for continuity, but if something comes up and you can’t make it, you’re welcome to come to any other class, including drumming, in order to make it up. You do NOT need to contact the instructor for permission to do this.

To make sure that everyone can take all of the classes they paid for during the session, we allow students to come to any of the other classes during the week. If you know ahead of time that you won’t be able to make a class, come to a different one the week before, you don’t have to wait until the last week of classes.

If you know that your schedule is very erratic, just use the pay-$15-per-class option. If you do end up being able to make all the classes, your total will not exceed the discounted session price, therefore it’s not more expensive to do the pay-per-class option.

Session registration fees are not transferable to the next session and are not refundable.

Haft Vadi teachers live very close to the studio, and can make it in all kinds of weather, and will probably not cancel. If they do, they will make an effort to contact participants ahead of time. Please ensure that you have provided contact information that makes this possible.
